The National Security Archive in Washington said it was filing a Freedom of Information Act request on behalf of a coalition called the National Campaign to Close Guantánamo, including an effort to gain more details about how loud music was used as an interrogation device. Based on public documents and interviews with former detainees, the archive said, Guantánamo prisoners were played loud music, including songs by AC/DC, Britney Spears and Marilyn Manson, as well as advertising jingles and “Sesame Street” tunes, in their cells and in preparation for interrogations. Thomas Blanton, the executive director of the archive, told The A.P., “At Guantánamo, the U.S. government turned a jukebox into an instrument of torture.” A spokeswoman for Joint Task Force Guantánamo, which handles the care and custody of detainees, said loud music had not been used with prisoners since the fall of 2003. New Delhi: A retired Indian engineer, Chewang Norphel, 76, has built 12 new glaciers already and is racing to create five more before he dies, and by then he hopes to train enough new ‘icemen’ to continue the work he is doing to save the world’s ‘third icecap’ from being transformed into rivers, reports Telegraph.

His race against time is shared by Manmohan Singh, the Indian Prime Minister, who called on the region’s Himalayan nations, including China, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan, to constitute a united front to tackle glacial melting.

The Himalayan glaciers, including Kashmir’s Siachen glacier, feed the region’s most important rivers, as they irrigate farm lands in Tibet, Nepal and Bangladesh and throughout the Indian subcontinent. The acceleration in glacial melting has been blamed as the reason for the increase in floods that have destroyed homes and crops.

But Chewang Norphel, the “Iceman of Ladakh”, believes that he has an answer.

By diverting melt water through a network of pipes into artificial lakes in the shaded side of mountain valleys, Norphel states that he has created new glaciers.

A dam or embankment is built to keep the water in, which freezes at night and remains frozen in the absence of direct sunlight. This water remains frozen until March, when the start of summer melts the new glacier and releases the water into the rivers downside.

His glaciers have been able to each store up to one million cubic feet of ice, which in turn can irrigate 200 hectares of farm land. This can make the difference between crop failure and a bumper crop of more than 1,000 tons of wheat for the farmers.

Norphel says that he has seen the effects of global warming on farmland as snows have become thinner on the ground and ice rivers have melted away.

His work has now been recognized by the Indian government, which has given him 16,000 pounds to build five new glaciers. But time is his enemy, he told The Hindustan Times. “I’m planning to train villagers with instruction CDs that I have made, so that I can pass on the knowledge before I die,” he said.

Wow!!! This is good! Actually pretty old stuff. Yet! This guy pulled off something thats truely commendable. Hope it doesn’t land him in the prison. Yet, its wonderful.

A clear showcase of how false information can be spread globally and how even the big brands of news aggregation providers publish information without checking up the authenticity of it!!!

This guy should be fired from Infy and blacklisted from flying (any arlines) for the next 2 years. This is the primary problem with Indian youth. They don’t think of anybody else other than themselves. One can clearly see this attitude on the roads when two-wheeler drivers try to squeeze through a traffic jam making it worse while the four wheeler drivers sit in their vehicles like idiots waiting for the traffic to clear up.

Such attitudes need to be fixed at primary education level. Unless we change our education to teach our children to become better people instead of self-centered intellectual bastards/bitches, we will have more such incidents in future. There is not going to be an end to this.

What’s the point of being educated if you are so selfish that you would create a bomb-scare for the sake to delaying a flight to your convenience? What about the tension that all the other passengers and crew went through within that short period of time?

New Delhi: A 25-year old engineer from Infosys, who thought that he would miss his Bangalore-bound GoAir flight because his train was running late, landed behind bars on Sunday for causing a bomb scare at the Delhi airport.

Abhishek Gupta was coming from Lucknow in Gorakhnath Express and was expected to reach Delhi railway station by 6 a.m. and catch a Bangalore-bound GoAir flight from the capital’s domestic airport around 8.45 a.m. Gupta’s train got delayed and he reached airport around 9.30 a.m. “He called up the call centre of GoAir informing them that he was late because of train delays and asked the staff to reschedule his journey and put him on the second flight to Bangalore. But his request was refused by the GoAir staff,” said a police officer.

“Gupta who desperately wanted to reach Bangalore, again called up at their call centre telling the staff that there was some suspicious object on the plane. He thought that by doing this, the flight would get delayed for some time, and in the mean time, he would reach the airport and board the same flight,” added the police officer.

After the call, the GoAir flight G8201 carrying 164 passengers was grounded and passengers asked to disembark. The bomb and dog disposal squads were pressed into service but nothing was found on the aircraft.

At 9:30 am, Gupta reached the airport and asked for the boarding pass. “It aroused some suspicion. Gupta was then cornered and questioned. He then confessed to causing the panic,” said the police officer.

A case has been registered against him under appropriate sections of the Indian penal code and he has been arrested.

Lol….. I loved this… You have to watch it completely. It gets better after some time… It takes real guts to stand up in a podium to talk like that!

Inevitably my Goodbye post had to be followed up with another one on what I am doing presently. If you have me as your contact in any of the popular social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter etc., you would have already known about this. Anyway, here goes. I have joined Yahoo!.

My primary focus of work at Yahoo! would be on HiFi Prototyping. I expect it to be challenging and interesting. Let’s see what’s in store…! hmmmm…..

I just got this call on my deskphone at 2:15 PM… And the conversation is -

• CALLER (FEMALE): Good Morning. Sorry for disturbing you sir. I am calling from HDFC Bank. Am I speaking Mr. Uday Shankar?
• ME: Tell me (Thinking how the h#ll did these people get this number. It’s just a week since I got this number!!! Even my close friends/relatives don’t have this number!)
• CALLER: Are you holding a HDFC card, Sir?
• ME: Yes.
• CALLER: Thank you for holding a HDFC card, Sir.
• CLICK! (She cuts the phone. End-Of-Conversation)

WTF?

Ok. I admit. This is really wierd. Just about a year ago, I sat down to write a similar post when I moved from Extreme Networks to Nokia. And here I am sitting down again to say goodbye to Nokia.

A lot has happened in the last one year. Both on professional and personal front. Some nice things. Some really bad things. Last year when I moved out of Extreme Networks, I had a few options in my hand and I picked Nokia out of those for the following reasons -

1. It is Nokia.
2. It’s one of the largest organizations that had stood hard and fast against many odds in the last century.
3. I liked Nokia mobiles while I hated some stuff in them.
4. I believed that I could actually make a difference.
5. I have worked in the financial domain, enterprise domain and networking domain. Telecommunication and hand-held devices were new challenges.

So… Then, why did I leave? Many ways to answer that question. Some of the reasons are personal and some are professional.

Well, the sugar coated reason is -

The company has millions of users around the world to please. That’s no easy task. ……. When I joined, I thought there was potential to help the company change course in its design direction. But I learned that Google had set its course long before I arrived. Google was a massive aircraft carrier, and I was just a small dinghy trying to push it a few degrees North.

Thats from Douglas Bowman, StopDesign in his post ‘Goodbye, Google‘. Just replace the word Google in the paragraph above with Nokia and you would have what I am trying to say. Now, that’s the sugar coated version. Just that.

Did you really think that I am going to write the ‘real’ bitter version out here on a public blog ….

Anyway, that’s past. I am focusing on the next steps in my life.

Take your vitamins and bump up your vitamin C.

Get plenty of exercise because exercise helps build your immune system.

Walk for at least one hour a day, go for a swim, take the stairs instead of the elevator, etc.

antibacterial stuff around.

Get lots of fresh air. Open windows whenever possible.

Get plenty of rest.

Try to eliminate as much stress from your life as you can.

The way I see it, if you keep your alcohol levels up, flu germs can’t get you!

OR …. You can take the doctor’s office approach. Think about it, when
you go for a shot, what do they do first? Clean your arm with alcohol.

Why? Because alcohol kills germs. So……

I walk to the liquor store (exercise), I put lime in my Corona (fruit),
celery in my Bloody Mary (veggies), drink on the bar patio (fresh air), get drunk, tell jokes, and laugh (eliminate stress) and then pass out (rest).

I thought we had stupid morons only in India to be paying taxes for the politicians to do us in the rear. It looks like even Americans are doing it in the form of Aid and British are also into it in the form of VIP Executive Committee of crap!

LONDON: The British government is spending around 25,000 pounds (over Rs.20 lakh) a day to protect former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf,

who has made London his new home, a newspaper reported on Friday.
The Times said Scotland Yard’s Specialist Protection Unit, known as SO1, has assigned a round-the-clock team of at least 10 men and women to protect the former army dictator, who lives in a luxurious three-bedroom flat in an Arab quarter of West London.

Musharraf has been using the flat as his base for about four months and also has a team of retired Pakistani commandos to protect him. He is said to be paying the Pakistanis from his own pocket.

The decision to provide him further British security was reportedly taken at a meeting of the Royal and VIP Executive Committee held at the home office.

The Times said the elite unit is responsible for the personal protection of the British prime minister, former prime ministers, certain government ministers, some ambassadors and "high-profile persons considered to be under threat from terrorist attack in the UK".

The costs are thought to include the provision of a car plus security equipment such as alarms and closed-circuit television cameras fitted to his flat. SO1 is providing the security detail.

Lord Nazir Ahmed, a Pakistani-born member of the ruling Labour Party, has written to British home secretary Alan Johnson urging him to stop spending taxpayers’ money on protecting Musharraf.

"I think the government needs to review Mr. Musharraf’s security. There are people within Britain who could do with those extra police officers rather than a man who can afford private bodyguards," he said.

In a scary funny way..!!!

It’s never too late to quit smoking and there are many benefits to be gained no matter what age you are when you give up. Here are some quick tips to help you kick the habit:

1. Believe in yourself: Believe that you can quit. Think about some of the most difficult things you have done in your life and realize that you have the guts and determination to quit smoking. It’s up to you.
2. Write down why you want to quit: Live longer, feel better, for your family, save money, smell better, find a mate more easily, etc. You know what’s bad about smoking and you know what you’ll get by quitting. Put it on paper and read it daily.
3. Plan ahead: Plan ahead for situations in which you are likely to be tempted to smoke, such as parties, drinking or going out for coffee. Try to avoid these situations in the early stages of your quitting program, or try sitting in the non-smoking section at restaurants, drinking your coffee standing up or with the other hand, or keeping something in your hand when you’re talking on the phone.
4. Cut back on cigarettes gradually: Ways to cut back gradually include: plan how many cigarettes you will smoke each day until your quit date, making the number you smoke smaller each day; buy only one pack at a time; change brands so you don’t enjoy smoking as much; give your cigarettes to someone else, so that you have to ask for them each time you want to smoke.
5. Know the triggers: Learn what triggers your desire for a cigarette, such as stress, the end of a meal, arrival at work, entering a bar, etc. Avoid these triggers or if that’s impossible, plan alternative ways to deal with the triggers.
6. Find another smoker who is trying to quit, and help each other with positive words and by lending an ear when quitting becomes difficult. Visit Forums and Chat Room on the internet to find a "quit buddy".
7. Ask your family and friends to support your decision to quit: Ask them to be completely supportive and non-judgmental. Let them know ahead of time that you will probably be irritable and even irrational while you withdraw from your smoking habit.
8. Do Not Skip Meals: Each puff of nicotine was your spoon releasing stored fats and sugars into your bloodstream. It allowed you to skip meals without experiencing wild blood-sugar swing symptoms such as an inability to concentrate or hunger related anxieties. Don’t add needless symptoms to withdrawal but instead learn to spread your normal daily calorie intake out more evenly over the entire day. Don’t eat more food but less food more often.
9. Drink lots of water: Water is good for you anyway, and most people don’t get enough. It will help flush the nicotine and other chemicals out of your body, plus it can help reduce cravings by fulfilling the "oral desires" that you may have.
10. Begin an exercise program: Exercise is simply incompatible with smoking. Exercise relieves stress and helps your body recover from years of damage from cigarettes. If necessary, start slow, with a short walk once or twice per day. Build up to 30 to 40 minutes of rigorous activity, 3 or 4 times per week.
11. Reward Yourself: Set up a plan for your rewards. Definitely reward yourself after the first day, and the second, and the third. Make them good rewards that you’ll look forward to: CDs, books, DVDs, T-shirts, shoes, a massage, a bike, a dinner out at your favorite restaurant, a hotel stay, whatever you can afford.

Guy was telling the story to his IT friends and trying to explain the Importance of domain knowledge….

One day my mother was out and my dad was in charge of me and my brother who is four years older than I am. I was maybe 3 and half years old and had just recovered from an accident in which my arm had been broken among other injuries.

Someone had given me a little ‘tea set’ as a get-well gift and it was one of my favorite toys. Daddy was in the living room engrossed in the evening news and my brother was playing nearby in the living room when I brought Daddy a little cup of ‘tea’, which was just water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my Mom came home.

My Dad made her wait in the living room to watch me bring him a cup of tea, because it was ‘just the cutest thing!!’

My Mom waited, and sure enough, here I come down the hall with a cup of tea for Daddy and she watches him drink it up, then she says to him, ‘Did it ever occur to you that the only place that baby can reach to get water is the toilet??’

MORAL OF THE STORY:

Apple is complaining that those Microsoft ads ‘You Find It, You Keep It’ is not nice and according to one Microsoft executive this is a conversation he had with Apple legal:

‘And so we’ve been running these PC value ads. Just giving people saying, hey, what are you looking to spend? “Oh, I’m looking to spend less than $1,000.” Well we’ll give you $1,000. Go in and look and see what you can buy. And they come out and they just show them. Those are completely unscripted commercials.

And you know why I know they’re working? Because two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department saying, hey — this is a true story — saying, “Hey, you need to stop running those ads, we lowered our prices.” They took like $100 off or something. It was the greatest single phone call in the history that I’ve ever taken in business. (Applause.)

I did cartwheels down the hallway. At first I said, “Is this a joke? Who are you?” Not understanding what an opportunity. And so we’re just going to keep running them and running them and running them.’

People, people, people. Web 2.0 can do a lot of things, but it doesn’t change the laws of physics, particularly in regards to the transmission of electricity.

To wit: A teenage girl was discovered dead this weekend, electrocuted after dropping her laptop in the bathtub.

Why did she need a computer in the tub? So she could update Twitter. About what she was tweeting remains unclear, but it was hopefully something more meaningful than the soap she was using.

Maria Barbu, 17, of Brasov, Romania, is said to have been plugging her laptop into wall current at the time, after "the battery died during a long session on social networking site Twitter as she took a soak."

Additional details are lacking, and are unlikely to be forthcoming anytime soon. And it’s unclear whether the laptop slipped from her hands or if she was so wet that the water dripping off of her closed the circuit and caused the shock.

Either way, any technology user should know by now that computers and bathrooms simply don’t mix. (If you aren’t worried about electrocution, think of the germs, won’t you?) While GFCI circuits were designed to prevent tragedies such as the all-too-common hair-dryer-in-the-tub accident, they aren’t perfect, and they aren’t universal, especially overseas.

And seriously, can’t Twitter wait until you get out of the bathtub?

I had lunch with 2 of my unmarried friends. One is engaged, the other is  a
mistress, and of course I have been married for 20+ years.

We were chatting about our relationships and decided to amaze our partners
by wearing a black leather bra, stiletto heels and a mask over our eyes. We
agreed to meet in a few days to exchange notes. Here’s how it all went.

My engaged friend: The other night when my boyfriend came over he found me

Beverly Hills—There is a growing segment of the plastic surgery industry focused entirely on women’s nether regions that includes procedures from the superficial (like labia re-sculpting) to the "functional." The most popular in the latter category is called vaginal rejuvenation: basically, a nip and tuck to give you a tighter cunt. Just as most birth control is designed to alter or confuse the female body and its cycles, the majority of new technologies purported to enhance sex seem to benefit men and cut women open in a disturbing display of misogyny.

While men can pop a blue pill to better their bedtime romps, women must opt for local or general anesthesia, and even then, it’s not clear how going under the knife improves their sexual function and satisfaction. Vaginal rejuvenation positions vaginal intercourse as the be-all and end-all of heterosexual sex. Yes, this face-lift for the pussy may make for a snugger fit, and more friction may feel good, but the procedure focuses entirely on the vagina, which, while a useful part of our anatomy, is not where the party is happening for most chicks. How about using all that cash to send hubby to Clit Camp to learn his way around our most sensitive and complex sexual organ? By the way, no such place exists. Go figure.

I recently read about yet another new procedure that’s supposed to greatly improve women’s sexual pleasure: G-spot amplification. It’s a collagen injection for the G-spot, to make it bigger. Theoretically, the more prominent the spot is, the easier it is to find and stimulate. I had to see for myself what the so-called "G-shot" (thegshot.com anddrmatlock.com) was all about, and since I happened to be in the plastic surgery capital, I called the Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation Institute to set up a consultation. The woman who answered the phone explained that the institute’s director, Dr. David Matlock, is not only the inventor of the shot but the only doctor in the country who performs it (on between 50 and 75 women so far, according to his assistant). He’s a very busy man, but after I mentioned my interest in the G-shot, he managed to "squeeze me in" that afternoon.

After filling out standard paperwork, I spied a slick purple pamphlet in the waiting room with photos of two beaming women, one alone, the other with a man. It read G-Spot Amplification—This Could Enhance Your Sex Life Forever. Inside there were "before" and "after" diagrams, a history of the G-spot, and testimonials in which one patient said, "[The shot] increased my sexual gratification and I have more intense orgasms," and another raved, "My husband loves this new injection. Now he makes me reach a climax that I’ve never reached before."

After a two-hour wait, I was escorted to Dr. Matlock’s office, where he appeared wearing blue scrubs ("This is my surgery day. I usually don’t see patients"). He sat down in his expensive leather chair, glanced at the papers I’d filled out, then looked up and said, "Where is your sexual-activity form?" I replied, "I filled out everything she gave me. There was no sexual-activity form." He seemed irked, considered getting the form, then asked, "Well, the most important thing is: Do you have any sexual dysfunction?" I wanted to respond slyly, "Don’t we all?" But I knew what he meant and the answer was no. He asked about my interest in the G-shot, and I gave my rehearsed-to-sound-spontaneous answer, the one I carefully formulated to appear smart but not too knowledgeable, lest I blow my cover as an ordinary person and reveal myself to be a sex columnist. "I know where my G-spot is," I said. "I have even taken a sex-ed class on the G-spot. When my girlfriends talk about their G-spots, the feelings they describe sound amazing, and that’s just not my experience of that kind of stimulation. So when I heard about this, I was very curious."

He then launched into a long explanation-slash-anatomy-lesson-cum-sales-pitch, which, strangely, began with him telling me that he would be interviewed about the G-shot for two TV programs in a few days. He used a fair amount of medical jargon and told me about the "clinical trials" he’s conducted. He definitely knows his way around the G-spot; he even demonstrated the famed two-finger "come here" technique as he explained how to find and stimulate it. He told me it’s a painless ("I’ve never had any complaints") 15-minute procedure which lasts for up to four months. So much for forever.

If you find that you or your partner cannot locate your G-spot, well, this will puff it up and make it hard to miss (imagine the locker room banter: "Dude, her G-spot was so big . . . "). The way I envision it, anything slipping inside is bound to run into it; it could be stimulated even without intention. But will it also become more sensitive? "Let me tell you what my patients tell me," Matlock said, cleverly dodging the question. "Many say that after the shot, they are in a constant state of arousal. I’ve got one who says that when she’s driving, and she hits a bump, she has an orgasm." That didn’t make any sense, knowing what I know about the G-spot, which is best stimulated with firm pressure. If there was nothing inside her rubbing the spot, what made for spontaneous climax?

He was ‘LEGEND’ in every sense of the word. He may have been involved in many scandals in the later part of his life. Yet, no one can deny that he redeined the world of music and dance. The history of dance and music cannot be told without dedicated a chapter on MJ.
