Banning Orkut???

The government is toying with the idea of banning, the popular social-networking Web site, following an attack by Shiv Sena activists on cyber cafes in a Mumbai suburb and the subsequent recommendation by the Maharashtra police to ban the site. The Shiv Sainiks were protesting against derogatory remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji posted by certain hate-communities on Orkut.

Orkut allows users to create their own content and is not proactively monitored unless reported for misuse. If the content is reported to be inappropriate, the Google-run Orkut reviews the content against a set of terms and conditions and removes defamatory or inflammatory content that violates these terms.

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team in New Delhi will take a final decision on whether to ban the site or not later on Friday.

Do you think Orkut should be banned? Does such a ban mean suppression of freedom? Or is the ban justified?

I think the entire idea is stupid. If you ban orkut, these hate communities will be posting their stuff on their blogs. and then u can ban the blogs, then they will turn to posting stuff on discussion boards. then u can ban them…. and eventually, we can ban the internet. Wow! Now, that would be innovative. ban the internet. and then we can sit around and talk about ‘maan and maryaadha’ and the glorious history ad culture of india.

When would these people stop this stupidity?

I myself am not much of a fan of orkut though. But, banning it for the mentioned reasons is absurd. You cant stop people who want to talk. You cant shut up a lot of people for long. It has not happened in history. Its not going to happen in future either!

Personally I think this is a direct attack on freedom of expression. Orkut or any other site shouldnt be banned just because it has content which a particular section of society does not approve. Everyone has the right to say what they want. And very true what you said about the ban not being successful, as people will post their views elsewhere. It will go on. Clinton had once described filtering internet as trying to nail jelly to the wall. Cant be done.

I have held the view that people who are racist and promote hate campaigns should be allowed to speak in any meduim. I want to know if someone is not too intelligent and the only way I can do that is if I hear them speak.
